Why Study GeoPhysical Science?
Scientific knowledge of the Earth is essential to making wise decisions about our use of the land, water and air. This knowledge helps us to identify and understand risks in potentially hazardous situations and locations. Our Earth is not a single entity that stands alone. It is a combination of biology, chemistry, physics and the Earth Sciences. Understand the processes of GeoPhysical science requires some understanding of the other sciences and how they are intertwinned with it.
What do we hope to accomplish?
1. A positive attitude toward science
2. Organizational skills, problem solving, critical thinking, discussionand writing skills
3. Recognition of interrelationships and details of Earth Systems
4. Specific scientific knowledge about Earth
5. Awareness of environmental issues and the consequences of our actions
What will I study? Approximate time
a. Introduction 3 weeks
b. Cosmosphere and waves 5 weeks
c. Atmosphere and severe storms 4 weeks
d. Oceanography, climate and climate changes 6 weeks
e. Resources and electricity 3 weeks
f. Geosphere 10 weeks
g. Hydrosphere - fresh water 3 weeks
h. Earth History and Landforms 2 weeks
Grading Scale.
A cummulative grading procedure is used for this class. Your grades begin on the first day of class and continue throughout the entire semester. Card markings are actually progress reports. There is no starting over at each card marking. It is very important to keep up with your work and get your homework assignments in on time.
Assignments are graded as follows.
1. On time - at beginning of class - full credit
2. Later that day - 10%
3. Next day or later - 50%
** If your name is not on your assignment it will be considered late and worth 50%.
Late assignments will not be accepted after the end of the card marking!
100-94 A 69.99 - 67 D+
93.99 - 90 A- 66.99 - 63 D
89.99 - 87 B+ 62.99 - 60 D-
86.99 - 83 B
82.99 - 80 B- BELOW 60% IS FAILING
79.99 - 77 C+
76.99 - 73 C
72.99 - 70 C-
What Do I Need for Class?
1. A three ring binder with paper (dividers work wonderfully)
2. Paper supply - fringe free
3. For all handed in work - dark ink pens - NO PENCILS
4. Student planner - must have to leave classroom
5. A quiet place to study at home
